Physical Education (PE)

Physical education develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. These include dance, games, gymnastics, swimming, athletics and outdoor adventure activities. A balance of individual, paired and group activities: co-operative, collaborative and competitive situations aim to cater for the preferences, strengths and needs of every pupil. Our KS2 children participate in swimming lessons during year 3 and year 4 and are able to develop their skills and technique from their individual starting points.

We provide opportunities:

  • to enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and coordination
  • to encourage children to work and play with others in a range of group situations
  • to develop the way children perform skills, and apply rules for different activities
  • to show children how to improve the quality and control of their performance
  • to teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise
  • to develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through creativity and imagination
  • to develop an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities, and how to evaluate their own success
  • to inspire the children to have a love of learning for physical activity

We also encourage a love of physical education through:

  • an annual ‘Health Week’ focusing on developing an awareness of the importance of physical and mental health and wellbeing
  • a range of after school sports clubs including football, gymnastics, tennis and team games
  • morning running sessions in the summer term
  • participation in Catholic Schools’ Tournaments (including netball, football, swimming and athletics)
  • regular outdoor learning sessions for all year groups in our ‘Wild Woods’
